About this book

Ballads is a book by Robert Louis Stevenson. The contents list The Song of Rahéro, a legend of Tahiti, The Feast of Famine on Marquesan manners, Ticonderoga, a legend of the West Highlands, Heather Ale, a Galloway legend, and Christmas at Sea. The dedication To Ori a Ori speaks of "my brother in the island mode" and offers "This story of your country and your clan."

Rahéro, a man of a godly race, wandered the land in his youth as an aito, delighting maids with his tongue and smiting men with his hand. Rahéro is lazy and crafty and loves to lie in the sun. A man dwells in a high-built lodge, hard by the roaring shore, raised on a noble terrace and with tikis, and sits on his oiled platform to commune with the divine.
