About this book
Military aviation was still taking shape when Frederick Arthur Ambrose Talbot published this account in 1915. He explains how balloons, dirigibles and aeroplanes were being drawn into the First World War, with particular attention to the services each could perform. The opening follows the development of captive balloons and describes the practical difficulties of supplying gas, transporting equipment and raising observers above the ground.
Talbot's aim is to make these developments understandable in ordinary language. His chapters cover aerial scouting, artillery observation, wireless communication and naval operations, as well as aircraft and the weapons used against them. In the middle excerpt, accounts of raids on Zeppelin facilities show how fog, flying height and speed shaped the airmen's decisions. For readers studying the early history of flight, the book offers a wartime view of aircraft as an emerging military tool, recording both technical arrangements and the expectations surrounding their use.
