About this book

Flight and underwater travel were changing rapidly when Willis J. Abbot wrote this history in 1918. He traces the development of balloons, airships, airplanes and submarines, linking experiments by inventors with their practical use in the First World War. Chapters on aviator training, submarine machinery and operations at sea show how technical problems became matters of military urgency. The preface also considers civilian uses, including carrying mail through the air.

Abbot explains the importance of aerial observation for directing artillery and presents arguments for expanding American aircraft production to support the Allies. His account captures the pressure to build machines quickly while new designs and battlefield experience were making recent models obsolete. Readers interested in aviation and naval engineering can examine both the machinery and the expectations surrounding it, including hopes that wartime inventions would find wider uses in transport.
