About this book
The Story of the Submarine is by Farnham Bishop. The preface says the book has been written for the nontechnical reader, for the man or boy who is interested in submarines and torpedoes and would like to know something about the men who invented these things. The preface says this is a small book and the story of the submarine is much longer than most people realize.
The text says the first Nordenfeldt boat was launched in 1886 and bought by Greece, after a fairly successful trial in the Bay of Salamis. The text says that only Nordenfeldt II was put together and tried, that she was one of the first submarines to be armed with a bow torpedo-tube for discharging Whiteheads, and that as a surface torpedo-boat she was a distinct success. The text says the Stromboli, the smaller of two craft, could be submerged till only her pilot-house, smoke-stack, and one ventilator showed above the water.
