About this book
This is the English translation of the Journal Intime of Henri-Frédéric Amiel, with an introduction and notes by Mrs. Humphrey Ward. A preface to the second edition says she added a good many new passages taken from the fifth French edition, revised and enlarged. One passage speaks of Amiel's German training and the Hegelian influences of Berlin, and notes Renan's regret that after Geneva and Berlin he never came to Paris.
The entries are dated. One, written at Weissenstein, a high point in the Jura, on 6 September 1867, describes the Alps rising above a milky sea of cloud and names peaks from the Tödi to the Diablerets. Another entry speaks of discontent, yearning and a thirst for the infinite, for love, and for something the writer cannot name.
