The title page calls the book an autobiography by Mrs. T. B. H. Stenhouse, of Salt Lake City, for more than twenty-five years the wife of a Mormon missionary and elder. The dedication inscribes the volume to the author's children, with all a mother's love and tenderness. The preface by Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe says that in these pages a woman, a wife and mother, speaks the sorrows and oppressions of which she has been the witness and the victim.
Mrs. T. B. H. Stenhouse writes that her dear mother rejoiced in the belief that she had been peculiarly blessed in being privileged to live at a time when the last dispensation was revealed. Mrs. T. B. H. Stenhouse writes that on the first Sunday morning she was in England, her parents asked her to accompany them to meeting. One woman in a conversation says her husband has two other wives besides herself, and that a more comfortable family could not be. The text says that a second trial of John D. Lee was earnestly demanded.
