About this book
Henry Charles Lea's historical sketch deals with celibacy among the clergy of the Christian church. A transcriber's note at the front lists corrections made to typographical errors, and the section headed "IV. Legislation" begins by remarking that, up to that point, the progress of asceticism had been the result of moral influence alone.
The pages range widely. One passage compares Buddhist monasteries with those of Europe, giving figures such as 3,716 monasteries in China by the middle of the seventh century and twelve great monasteries near Lhassa holding 18,500 lamas. The footnotes cite a Latin work on the doctrine of priestly celibacy printed at Warsaw in 1801, an anonymous 1800 work called "A Modest Apology for the Catholics of Great Britain"; a nearby passage cites Lecky on an emperor's suppression of 184 monasteries.
