About this book
Celtic Scotland is by W. F. Skene. The pages sampled are mostly footnotes, which the transcriber collected at the end of each chapter and renumbered in one run through the whole text.
The notes cite Irish annals and Latin sources, and they send the reader to Dr. Reeves on the British Culdees. One note takes up the title Summus Episcopus, 'highest bishop', given to Fothad, a bishop, and says the Gospel book he guarded may have been a gift from Queen Margaret. Other notes give Bede's account of the monks of Iona being brought to the canonical Easter and tonsure, and list dated events, some at Iona, in Latin and Irish.
