About this book

Samuel Willoughby Duffield's study of the Latin hymns, edited and completed by R. E. Thompson of the University of Pennsylvania, is dated New York 1889. Its table of contents lists an editor's preface and an introduction before the numbered chapters.

The text discusses Ambrose and the hymns called Ambrosian, noting that twelve possibly, and eight or fewer with moderate certainty, can be regarded as his own, and that Augustine wrote no hymns but was the cause of hymns in others, such as Peter Damiani. It calls the assigning of hymns to authors a precarious undertaking and names early compilers such as Thomasius, George Fabricius and Clichtove. In one discussion the earliest mention of a hymn is dated A.D. 898, it appears in breviaries of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, and the author argues for Rabanus Maurus, Bishop of Mainz.
