About this book
The preface identifies Nature-Study as an educational movement receiving increasing importance both in the writer's country and abroad. The account of mustard and sycamore germination describes cotyledons coming out of the seed-coat and unfolding once the root is well established, and being carried upwards towards the light. The germinating vegetable-marrow seed develops a peg that holds down the lower half of the seed-coat while the upper half rises to release the cotyledons.
The description of wings explains that minute overlapping scales form a delicate bloom readily detached by rough handling, with gorgeously coloured symmetrical patterns in many butterflies and moths. The elm is described as usually lofty, with a straight trunk, slender branches, rounded foliage, rough corky bark and flowers appearing before the leaves expand.
