About this book
Arne; Early Tales and Sketches is by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, translated from the Norse by Rasmus B. Anderson. The preface says that Arne was written in 1858 and is thought by many to be Björnson's best story. The contents list the early tales and sketches The Railroad and the Churchyard, A Dangerous Wooing, The Bear Hunter and The Eagle's Nest.
An infant of the houseman's daughter at Kampen is brought to baptism and christened Arne, and tailor Nils is spoken of as its father. A speaker confesses to hiding a letter that came from a far-off country and that the speaker knew must be from Kristian, and says of the third letter that it was carried in the bosom for three days. A conversation includes Hans Volden saying that Lars cannot depend very much upon his rifle, a question whether he wants Niels Böen along with him, and a reply that Niels will get permission neither from his mother nor from his sister.
