About this book

Artists' Wives is by Alphonse Daudet, translated by Laura Ensor. The contents list pieces titled Madame Heurtebise, The Credo of Love, The Transteverina, A Couple of Singers, Bohemia at Home and The Comtesse Irma. The Prologue shows a poet and a painter talking together one evening after dinner.

The painter says his opinion is formed by all the sad things he has seen elsewhere, all the misunderstandings so frequent in the households of artists, and caused solely by their abnormal life. A sculptor in full maturity of age and talent has just exiled himself, leaving wife and children behind him, and public opinion condemns him. Guillardin marches up and down, bows as though entering the Academy, smiles to his colleagues of the fine arts, and assumes academical attitudes.

Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet was a French novelist and storyteller whose comic observation and affection for southern France gave his work a distinctive regional character.
