About this book
Atlantida carries the credit "Translated by Mary C. Tongue and Mary Ross" and a dedication line reading "To André Suarès". An epigraph warns "not to be surprised to hear me calling barbarians by Grecian names" and is attributed to "PLATO Critias". The contents list names chapters such as "THE COUNTRY OF FEAR", "THE RED MARBLE HALL" and "THE LAMENT OF TANIT-ZERGA", among others.
A narrator lists the people at Hassi-Inifel as "thirty native Arabs and four Europeans", naming the four as himself, the Sergeant, a Corporal and Gourrut. A man addresses a Lieutenant with "All right, then, Lieutenant" and recalls "It was in 1899. I was then Mess Sergeant at Sfax, with the 4th Spahis." M. Le Mesge says "It is orichalch" and asks Captain Morhange whether he has never heard of the method of Dr. Variot "by which a human body can be preserved without embalming". Tanit-Zerga is the one who breaks a deep silence with the words "Night is coming. We must eat so as to leave as soon as possible."
