About this book
Théophile Gautier first published this novel of ancient Egypt in 1857 and 1858, and this English edition by F. C. de Sumichrast of Harvard appeared in 1901. It begins in the Valley of Biban el Moluk, where a wealthy young English lord, Evandale, and a German scholar named Rumphius ride out in search of a royal tomb that no treasure-seeker has ever opened.
What they find leads back thousands of years to Thebes and to Tahoser, the daughter of a priest, whose story unfolds among the harvest fields, palaces and processions of the Nile. A young Hebrew, Poeri, and the Pharaoh himself both enter her life, and Gautier sets the tale against the time of Moses and Aaron.
The book is rich in close description of temples, tombs, dress and daily work, drawn from the Egyptology of Gautier's day. The volume also carries several of his travel pieces, including the unwrapping of a mummy and a trip from Alexandria to Cairo written on his 1869 visit for the opening of the Suez Canal.
