Bambi

Felix Salten’s 1923 novel follows a young roe deer from his first wobbling steps to solitary adulthood in a central European forest. Bambi learns the seasons, the language of the meadow, and the quiet wisdom of the old stag who watches over him, but he also learns fear, above all of Man, whose gun takes his mother and haunts the woods. Salten wrote for adults as much as for children, and beneath the tender nature writing runs a darker meditation on danger, loss, and survival that later readers saw as an allegory of persecution.
