About this book
Bayard: The Good Knight Without Fear and Without Reproach is by Christopher Hare, with coloured illustrations by Herbert Cole. The introduction says the most valuable chronicle of the Good Knight's life and deeds was written with charming simplicity by a faithful follower, and that the incidents in the following pages are retold from his record. The introduction says the courtesy title of the Good Knight without Fear and without Reproach is no fancy name bestowed by modern admirers, but was elicited by the hero's merits in his own day and from his own people.
One scene shows Aymon de Bayard turning to his eldest son and asking him what career in life he would like to follow. Pierre, the Good Knight of history, who was then thirteen years of age and as lively as a cricket, says "I will follow the profession of arms like you and your ancestors. It is that which I desire more than anything else in the world." One passage says that Bayard kept at bay the overwhelming forces of the enemy for three weeks, until the King of France himself arrived with a great army.
