About this book

Kings, bishops and monastic communities share the pages of this account of Christianity in early England. Bede traces events from Roman expeditions in Britain to the arrival of Augustine in Kent and the spread of the faith through English kingdoms. Letters, royal decisions and accounts of healing sit alongside disputes over church practice. This 1907 translation includes an introduction, a life of Bede and notes.

Among the people given close attention is Abbess Hilda, whose life connects the household of King Edwin with communities guided by Bishop Aidan. Her move into monastic life and her work organizing religious houses show how individual lives become part of the larger history. Readers interested in early British history will find a narrative in which political authority, religious teaching and reports of divine intervention repeatedly meet.
