About this book
Beeton's Book of Needlework was first published in Great Britain in 1870 and announces six hundred engravings. Its title page lists tatting, crochet, knitting, netting, embroidery, point lace, guipure d'art, Berlin work, monograms, initials and names, and pillow lace, and promises that every pattern states the material it needs. A preface by Samuel Butler remarks on the long history of the art.
The instructions are written as counted steps. A tatting star is worked with doubles and purls using a shuttle, with ovals and scallops repeated until it is complete. A crochet pattern for a d'oyley gives numbered rounds of chains and loops. Canvas stitches such as tent stitch and the slanting and straight Gobelin stitch each have their own illustration number.
