About this book

Fruits of Culture is identified as a comedy in four acts, with a character list that introduces a retired Lieutenant of the Horse Guards. The retired officer owns more than 60,000 acres in various provinces, believes in Spiritualism and likes astonishing people with wonderful stories. Tánya tells Gregory to leave her alone and says that she loves nobody when he asks why she does not love him.

Tánya explains to peasants that she pulls a woman into tight lacing for beauty's sake, sometimes until her own hands tingle. Theodore Ivánitch explains that Simon is engaged to Tánya and says Gregory does not behave properly or honestly toward her.
