About this book

Father Sergius is a work by Leo Tolstoy. In Petersburg in the eighteen-forties, an officer of the Cuirassier Life Guards, a handsome prince, leaves the service, breaks off his engagement and retires to a monastery to become a monk. For Prince Stepan Kasatsky himself, the text says, it all occurred so naturally that he could not imagine how he could have acted otherwise.

Kasatsky gave half his property to his sister, and in everything he took up tried to attain such success and perfection as would evoke praise and surprise. A woman looks at a man's pale face and quivering left cheek and suddenly feels ashamed, while he lets his eyes, shining with a quiet light of joy, rest upon her. Kasatsky asks Praskovya Mikhaylovna whether her pupils get on well, and a reply says that one of them is a splendid girl.
