About this book

Beyond Lies the Wub is a story by Philip K. Dick. It begins as a spaceship is being loaded with animals and birds driven up the gangplank, while an Optus in robes stands by with folded arms and Captain Franco lights a cigarette.

Peterson comes along the path leading a huge, sagging creature by a string. He says he got it from a native for fifty cents, and that the natives call it a wub. Franco calls it a pig and pokes its side. The wub can speak. In one passage it praises the Captain's tidy apartment, talks of philosophy and the arts, and asks what lasting contact between their peoples can be made if the Captain thinks of eating it.
