About this book
Beyond the Door is by Philip K. Dick, and a note on it says Philip Dick used the idea of the lonely life the bird in a cuckoo clock has to lead for this "brief fantasy tale." Larry Thomas bought a cuckoo clock, and that night at the dinner table he brought it out and set it down beside a plate while Doris stared at it with her hand to her mouth.
A man named Bob asks Doris who "he" is, and she says that when she is there alone he comes right out for her every fifteen minutes, even though he really only has to come out on the hour. Bob asks a doctor if it is "very easy to break your neck, falling from so low a chair," and the doctor answers "It was an accident; I'm positive."
