About this book
On the Heights is a novel by Berthold Auerbach, translated by Simon Adler Stern. Walpurga composes herself, turns to her husband and asks Hansei whether he will be satisfied with whatever she may do or say. Walpurga says that she is the child’s mother and the wife, that if she goes she must and is sure she can keep down all grief so that she may do no harm to the other child, and that her answer is yes.
Madame Gunther and her daughters sit on the steps in a summer house, busily engaged in needlework, where flowers and presents for Paula had been arranged. Paula, the younger of the two, is described as having, like Irma, just entered her twenty-first year. As the party comes in sight of their native village, the grandmother asks them to stop, goes into the woods, kneels until her face touches the ground, and exclaims: God be praised, I'm with thee again!
