About this book
Botany for Ladies presents itself as a popular introduction according to the classification of De Candolle, with a preface recalling unsuccessful attempts to learn the Linnean system. The preface describes the necessity of knowing something of botany as well as gardening, and the habit of asking the names of beautiful flowers during visits to gardens. The explanation of flowers identifies the production of seed as their object, with the coloured parts serving as a covering for the stamens and pistil.
The account of the ovary describes a hollow structure that sometimes has several cells containing ovules, which afterwards become seeds. The section on the club-moss tribe describes plants that appear to occupy an intermediate space between ferns and mosses, with creeping stems and erect stems clothed in overlapping leaves.
