About this book
Breakfast Dainties is a book by Thomas J. Murrey. A contents list gives remarks on breakfast cookery and a section on fruits, such as apples, bananas, cantaloupes and strawberries, among others. The remarks on breakfast cookery contain a verse saying that dinner may be pleasant, so may social tea, but yet methinks the breakfast is best of all the three. The remarks say that the importance of preparing a variety of dainty dishes for the breakfast table is but lightly considered by many who can afford luxuries.
The remarks advise readers to avoid asking the innocent but often annoying question of what shall we have for breakfast, and to rely upon their own resources and inventiveness. To test eggs, the text says to dissolve an ounce of salt in ten ounces of water and add the eggs; good ones will sink, indifferent eggs will swim, and bad eggs will float, even in pure water. The recipe for Baked Eggs calls for half a pound of lean boiled ham, minced, and an equal quantity of cracker crumbs.
