About this book
British Flags carries the subtitle Their Early History, and Their Development at Sea; with an Account of the Origin of the Flag as a National Device. W. G. Perrin is named as the author on the title page, and the book includes an illustration of a ship of Henry VIII, circa 1545.
One passage defines flag words: standard, streamer, pennon, pennoncel, pennant, ensign and others, and says that the ensign was borrowed from the land service in the sixteenth century. Another covers the distinction pendant, with a description from Pepys's Miscellanea of a pendant bearing the cross of St George on a white field. It notes that in 1683 the Navy Board had to be reminded of its use and that by 1692 commanders were forbidden to wear such pendants without order. Another records a flag and ensign lowered to mark the death of a ship's commanding officer.
