About this book
The discussion of women's work notes that some duties are unpaid, while others receive a fair rate and, in some cases, the same rate as men's work. The account of education describes a severe initial shortage of good secondary schools and women's efforts to supplement their education through private study or public lectures. The Philosophical Institution of Edinburgh is described as providing lectures, a library and a reading room, open to women as well as men from its foundation.
The discussion of titles says honours received from husbands sometimes carried considerable privileges, and widows sometimes retained their husbands' full honours and powers. Randol, Earl of Chester and Lincoln, granted the Earldom of Lincoln to his sister, the Lady Hawise de Quency.
