The story opens with banter: Sam offers to knock Dave Sloan's block off for two cents, and Dave hands him a nickel. Sam, who has knocked about Alaska with Dave for five years, objects that Dave has told a tourist girl he is the best bear shot in Alaska. He says Dave has never shot a bear and that the tale of a bearskin the color of a girl's eyes really belonged to Bill Halsey. Dave is now engaged to the girl, and her eyes are brown.
Dave announces that they will take the trail in the morning for Bear Creek, where the Alaska Road Commission reports bear and offers the use of its tents. In another passage the girl hears an account of the bear and the tent, and tells Dave and Sam she is disappointed in them, because two trappers followed along and saw what happened.
