About this book

Cab and Caboose is by Kirk Munroe. One passage introduces Rodman Ray Blake, whom the boys sometimes call Railroad Blake. He is Major Appleby's nephew and the son of the Major's only sister, who married a young artist against her brother's wish. The Major treats the boy with assumed indifference, and Snyder Appleby is jealous of Rodman from the first. The passage also mentions a race for the Railroad Cup, in which a racer who counts himself a sure winner skips training and is beaten by a boy nearly two years younger.

In another passage a man with a side-tracked freight watches an express rush past, loaded with money, jewelry and plate and known along the road as the "gold mine". Each car has a trusted messenger who locks himself in. In a third, Rod says he cannot leave Mr. Stump to run number 10 without a fireman, and that he is more determined than ever to be a railroad man.
