About this book

The Andes of Southern Peru includes figures captioned with the upper entrance to the Pongo de Mainique, where the Urubamba crosses the Front Range of the Andes in a splendid gateway 4,000 feet deep. A caption describes the lower half of a two-thousand-foot cliff in the granite Canyon of Torontoy, Urubamba Valley.

Rosalina is described as hardly more than a name on the map and a camp site on the river bank, and the text says no one thought of arranging so difficult a journey in less than a month, since canoe and Indians were difficult to find and the river trip was dangerous. Cochabamba, Bolivia, lies 8,000 feet above sea level in a broad basin in the Eastern Andes, and the basin is dry on account of an eastern front range that keeps out the rain-bearing trade winds. A list of places gives entries such as Quillagua, village, northern Chile, lat. 21° 30′, long. 69° 35′, and Rosalina, settlement, lat. 12° 35′.
