About this book
George Cary Eggleston dedicates Recollections of a Varied Life to Marion, called in the dedication his wife, as recollections of a life that she has loyally shared, encouraged, and inspired. The contents list chapters titled, among others, A Poor Boy's Career, A Limitless Hospitality, and A Breakfast Revolution. The text says that in the generations that have followed some at least of the descendants of that poor white class, whose case had always been accounted hopeless, have risen to distinction in intellectual ways.
Under the heading My First Boys' Book, the writer's two little boys climb upon the writer's knees and beg for an Injun story. The specific demand for an Injun story led the writer to think of the Creek War in Alabama and Mississippi. The writer says that whoever would make a living with a pen must work hard of necessity, and that the work has been always a joy.
