About this book
Cedar Chests, How to Make Them includes a chapter on the finishing of cedar, which says red cedar, contrary to supposition, is not a hard wood to finish. The chapter says red cedar, having a closed grain, needs no filler, which greatly simplifies its finishing. The text says repeated coats of thin shellac will look better and stick better than a few heavy coats.
Under coloring the wood, the text says some people object to the white streaks of sap wood contrasting so strongly with the red heart wood, while others are of the opinion that this contrast is one of the beauties of red cedar. The text says Southern Juniper furnishes all of these desirable points, and in addition its pleasant aroma permits the immediate wearing of apparel taken from the cedar chest without airing, as must be done with garments protected by moth balls. The text says Design No. 21 is larger than No. 20 but practically the same with the exception of its decoration, which uses hinge plates and a well designed copper decoration on the front instead of decalcomanias.
