About this book
Famous Fighters of the Fleet, by Edward Fraser, offers glimpses through the cannon smoke in the days of the old navy. A verse credited to Henry Newbolt speaks of a kingdom none can take, the realm of the circling sea, to be ruled by the rightful sons of Blake and the Rodneys yet to be. The text says thirty-one boilers, of the much-maligned Belleville type, supply the steam, and that six hundred and eighty officers and men form the complement of the Monmouth.
The text names George Neale, a seaman of the Formidable, who died at Coventry in 1849. The text says the Formidable had been fitted for Admiral Duncan's flag, and sailed from the Downs for the Texel on the very day that the battle was fought. The text says less is on record about what took place on board the other ships, and that all did their duty.
