About this book
Mr. Faust is by Arthur Davison Ficke, and an introduction says that this play shows a surprising maturity, intellectually as well as artistically. The introduction says that through all the work of Arthur Davison Ficke runs a note of bigness that compels attention even when one feels that he is still groping both for form and thought.
A stage scene shows John Faust before a fire, with Brander and Oldham, both in evening dress, lounging in chairs near Faust, all three smoking. A character named Brander says, "You are a thorn to me, a thorn in the flesh." A character named Satan says he would make one final offer to Faust, naming one more haven, the only one of earth that can be judged in glory to surpass this paradise. A stage direction describes Satan dressed in a long black cloak of foreign cut, with, for the first time, the look of sinister majesty appropriate to the Prince of Hell.
