About this book
Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada is by Washington Irving, from the mss. of Fray Antonio Agapida. The chapter list includes the embassy of Don Juan de Vera to demand arrears of tribute from the Moorish monarch and the expedition of the Marques of Cadiz against Alhama. Muley Abul Hassan receives the cavalier in state in the Hall of Ambassadors, one of the most sumptuous apartments of the Alhambra, and says that the kings of Granada, who used to pay tribute in money to the Castilian crown, are dead.
The main body of the army is led by the king in person, and the king takes the rough and perilous road of the mountains, where four thousand pioneers are sent in advance. A party attended by the ancient domestics of the household, and by a small guard of veteran Moors loyally attached to the fallen monarch, proceeds along the banks of the Xenil on the road that leads to the Alpuxarras.
