Washington Irving was an American essayist, biographer, historian, and short-story writer whose polished prose helped establish an international audience for literature from the young United States. Born in New York in 1783, he wrote under several comic personae before publishing The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, a collection that joined travel sketches, literary essays, and tales drawn from European and American traditions. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow appears within that collection and transformed Hudson Valley folklore into one of his most enduring stories. Irving later lived in Spain, where his research and residence near Granada informed The Alhambra, a blend of travel narrative, history, legend, and imaginative tale. Cuentos Clásicos del Norte is a later Spanish-language anthology that places selections by Irving alongside work by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edward Everett Hale. These different publication contexts show Irving's range and his long afterlife in translation, adaptation, school reading, and shared collections. He died in 1859 at Sunnyside, his Hudson River home.
