About this book

Chronicles of the Canongate, 1st Series is by Walter Scott, and its contents list chapters in which Mr. Croftangry revisits Glentanner and bids adieu to Clydesdale. A narrative says that Colonel Whitefoord pressed solicitations for pardon to the saver of his life, or at least for a protection for his wife and family, and that he applied to the Duke of Cumberland and urged his suit with every argument which he could think of. The same story has the chieftain lying concealed in a cave near his own house, before which a small body of regular soldiers were encamped.

One voice says Robert Bruce was a great man, even a Baliol must admit that. A note quotes an account saying the comparative merit of knockers and pins was for a long time a subject of doubt, and many knockers got their heads twisted off in the course of the dispute.
