About this book

Belief in spirits becomes a problem of evidence in Walter Scott's ten letters on witchcraft and demonology. Addressed to J. G. Lockhart, they draw on old narratives and criminal records to examine how people come to accept supernatural claims. The first letter considers dreams, sleepwalking, misleading sensations and the influence of other people's testimony. These topics give the collection a place in the history of ideas as well as the study of folklore.

Historical accusations receive a different kind of scrutiny. Scott discusses Jeanne's condemnation and the case of the Duchess of Gloucester, connecting charges of sorcery with political rivalry and religious hostility. His account also considers how public attention and severe inquiries helped spread fear. Readers interested in the social power of supernatural belief will find anecdotes placed beside arguments about perception, authority and the treatment of accused people.
