About this book

Possession of Ellangowan brings Gilbert Glossin wealth without the respect he expects. Having obtained his benefactor's estate through schemes, he finds that both local gentry and ordinary people judge how he rose. His interest in discovering who wounded Charles Hazlewood sits beside his concern for his own position. In another voice, Julia Mannering writes to Matilda about Brown, her hope that he has reached safety and her fear of what an arrest could mean.

Set in Scotland, Walter Scott's historical novel connects property and inheritance with reputation, social rank and the use of legal authority. The introduction traces the book's starting point to a tale about an astrologer's warning over a newborn child's future, while making clear that the finished novel developed away from that source. Readers can follow the contrast between Julia's private anxiety and Glossin's calculations in public life. The passages give a close view of how family interests and the desire for recognition shape people's responses to danger.

About the author

Walter Scott

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish poet and novelist who effectively invented the historical novel with works like Ivanhoe and Waverley. Enormously popular across Europe, he shaped how the nineteenth century imagined the past.
