About this book
The Tapestried Chamber, and Death of the Laird's Jock is by Sir Walter Scott. The introduction says a little story from The Keepsake of 1828 was told to the speaker many years ago by the late Miss Anna Seward. The narrative says that, read aloud to an undoubting audience by the doubtful light of the closing evening, it may redeem its character as a good ghost story.
About the end of the American war, a general officer, to whom Miss S. gave the name of Browne, is among those returning to their own country. A speaker addressing my lord describes a figure that turned slowly round and displayed a countenance with the fixed features of a corpse, marked with the traces of the vilest and most hideous passions. A scene at the lists has the combatants meeting, with numbers of both nations eager to witness the event of the day, and the text calls it needless to describe the struggle.
