About this book
Coal, and What We Get from It is a book by Raphael Meldola. The title page calls it A Romance of Applied Science, expanded from the notes of a lecture delivered in the theatre of the London Institution. The book is dedicated by the author to William Henry Perkin, the founder of the coal-tar colour industry.
The text says seams of coal, varying in thickness from a few inches to three or four feet, always rest on a bed of clay, known technically as the underclay, which represents the soil on which the plants originally grew. The text calls Perkin's mauve the first coal-tar colouring-matter. The text says the azine dyes are basic and mostly of a red or pink shade, somewhat fugitive when exposed to light, but possessing a certain value on account of their affinity for cotton. An index lists entries such as Analyses of coal, Aniline black, Antipyrine and Arctic coal, among others.
