About this book

The Northmen in Britain includes, among others, a chapter titled Alfred the Great. The text says it was in the midst of incessant warfare that Alfred ascended the throne of Wessex. An epigraph credited to The Seafarer (Old English Poem) says there is no man so high-hearted over earth, nor so loyal to his lord, that he may not have always sad yearning towards the sea-faring.

The text says King Eirik in Sweden and King Gorm the Old in Denmark were establishing themselves on the thrones of united kingdoms. The text names Bergthora, a brave, high-spirited woman, as the wife in a household with three daughters and three sons named Skarphedinn, Grim, and Helgi. An account in the text says that suddenly there arrived on the coast a fleet of Danes, not large, but of three ships only: this was their first arrival.
