About this book
The Cid is credited to Pierre Corneille, and its text is labelled a literal translation by Roscoe Mongan Hinds. The contents list the acts from Act the First to Act the Fifth. A preface says Cid Campeador is the name given in histories, traditions and songs to the most celebrated of Spain's national heroes.
The preface gives the real name as Rodrigo or Ruy Diaz and says he was born at Burgos about the year 1040. Chimène speaks of an agitated soul that refuses this joy, and of fearing a great reverse in this great happiness. A speaker asks a king, for mercy's sake, to revoke a law so severe, and wishes to weep continually in a sacred cloister, even to a last sigh, for a father and a lover.
