About this book
Creatures That Once Were Men is a book by Maksim Gorky. The book is translated from the Russian by J. M. Shirazi and others. The contents list includes, among others, Twenty-Six Men and a Girl, and an introduction by G. K. Chesterton.
A shed, formerly a blacksmith's forge, is kept by a retired captain named Aristid Fomich Kuvalda. The walls smelt of smoke, the earthen floor of dampness, and the long, wide board of rotting rags. The clamor oppressed the spirit, the dust fretted the nostrils and blinded the eyes, and the sweltering heat baked and exhausted the body. Sergei mocked, laughing ironically, and continued, encouraged by the apathy of Mitia.
