About this book
In the World is by Maksim Gorky and was translated by Mrs. Gertrude M. Foakes. In Chapter I, the narrator goes out into the world as shop-boy at a fashionable boot-shop in the main street of the town. The narrator describes his master as a small, round man with a brown, rugged face, green teeth, and watery, mud-colored eyes.
A scene describes a coffin ornamented with silver paper, and a speaker says it is a chapel and that the sparrow is a dead person. Natalia hits out at the soldiers who, having made their peace, both tried to embrace her, shouting at them to take their paws off her. A man with a mane of unbrushed hair would ask with sudden passion what they were looking at and what they saw, and sometimes they replied that they were looking at a werwolf.
