About this book

Public education brings Thomas Henry Huxley into arguments about the proper limits of government in this collection of essays and addresses. In his 1873 preface, he recalls serving on the London School Board and explains his disagreement with Herbert Spencer over state action. Scientific questions sit alongside these political concerns, including disputes about Darwin's critics and the interpretation of accounts of creation.

Huxley writes as a participant in the debates, naming his opponents and explaining where he thinks their arguments fail. The discussion of human populations uses nineteenth-century racial categories while questioning how securely the available evidence supports broad claims. Archaeology, anatomy and the study of language enter that inquiry. Readers interested in the history of scientific reasoning will find arguments shaped by both the evidence available to Huxley and the public controversies in which he took part.
