About this book

Evolution and Ethics, and Other Essays is a book of essays by Thomas H. Huxley. The contents list Science and Morals (1886), Social Diseases and Worse Remedies, The Salvation Army and Articles of War. The preface says the discourse on Evolution and Ethics, reprinted in the first half of the present volume, was delivered before the University of Oxford as the second of the annual lectures founded by Mr. Romanes.

A patch is cut off from the rest by a wall, its native vegetation is, as far as possible, extirpated, and a colony of strange plants is imported and set down in its place; in short, it is made into a garden. The writing holds it evident that the strongest point against the compatibility of Darwins hypothesis with design in Nature is made when natural selection is referred to as picking out those variations which are improvements.
