About this book

Hasisadra’s Adventure is essay 7 from Science and Hebrew Tradition by Thomas Henry Huxley. The text tells of a city in Mesopotamia called Surippak, where a dweller whose name, if rightly reported, was Hasisadra received a strange dream one night. The dream foretold the speedy coming of a great flood and warned Hasisadra to lose no time in building a ship.

The text says there are weighty reasons for believing that the story of Hasisadra’s flood was well known in Mesopotamia before the year 2000 B.C. The author says natural science may be able to show, from the nature of the country, either that such an event as that described in the story is impossible, or at any rate highly improbable, or that it is consonant with probability. The author says that persons duly conversant with even the elements of natural science decline to take the Noachian deluge seriously.
