About this book

Snow keeps eight-year-old Davy indoors at his grandmother's house on Christmas Eve. After reading about Alice in Wonderland, he watches the fire and thinks about dinner, until a tiny red-clad visitor begins eating the hot coals. The Goblin has come to challenge Davy's disbelief in fairy-tale creatures, and a household clock soon becomes an unlikely boat, furnished with sponge-cake cushions.

Charles Edward Carryl's children's fantasy turns familiar stories and everyday objects into material for comic surprises. Davy's practical questions meet a companion who can disappear, change size to fit his clothes, and treat impossible events as ordinary conveniences. At Sindbad's house, even a beard and a turban acquire absurd uses. The chapter titles promise further encounters with Jack and the Beanstalk, Robinson Crusoe, and a waistcoated whale. Readers interested in playful dialogue and nonsense fiction will find a child's doubts tested by a world that refuses to follow sensible rules.
