About this book

A royal christening in Pantouflia goes wrong when the queen refuses to invite the fairies. They arrive anyway, bringing magical gifts for the baby prince, including a flying carpet, a purse that never empties, and an unusual promise: Prigio will be too clever. As he grows up, his habit of correcting everyone from the cook to the court's teachers makes his intelligence a burden to his family and neighbours. Andrew Lang turns familiar fairy tale customs into a comic story about knowledge, manners, and the trouble caused by always being right.

Magic becomes practical when Prigio encounters the fiery Firedrake and the icy Remora. Their clash brings clouds of steam and a striking contrast between heat and frost, while the prince watches from a hill. Readers will find enchanted objects, royal quarrels, and a narrator who keeps interrupting the tale with jokes. The result offers both a children's adventure and humour about adults who cling to their own opinions.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
